When we adopted Grandma four years ago, we expected her to be reasonably compliant.
Unfortunately, training her has been an uphill battle. She is stubborn and old, of course. She was probably never properly socialized around dogs before she met us.
Dad is a tad more compliant. He gives us almost everything we want and pays the bills. His training is coming along nicely.
She claims there was once a Corgi named Bucky—and something about 250 Icelandic horses—but chances are most of that is fictional.
The good thing is that Grandma loves us. That makes taking care of her a little easier.
When we go on adventures, most people love us. They appreciate our enthusiasm, our happiness, and our deep interest in meeting everyone.
Interacting with us brings people joy. They often tell Grandma that our exuberance has made their day. Then they thank her for letting them pet us—as if she had a say!
But a few people seem to think we are a little too exuberant.
They try to be diplomatic. They quietly suggest that Grandma might want to consult a dog trainer.
Grandma just laughs.
She explains that our outings are our quality time together, and she wants us to enjoy them as much as she does.
Personally, I think those people are trying to say that we need a people trainer.
They are simply too diplomatic to say it outright.

You don’t train animals for photographs.
You train yourself to be ready.
